Modem connection
« on: January 14, 2005, 12:32:27 PM »
when using XServer or TLServer, user name and PW are needed.

How about when using Modem connection?
1. Do we still need User Name and PW?
2. Still have different level of access (Programmer, user, and guest)?

Thanks.

The PLC cannot use the MODEM to directly connect to the Internet.

Howver, if you connect the PLC to a modem, and connect the PC running TLServer to the modem, then the connection between the modems doesnot  require any username and password. But that has no effect on the way TRiLOGI client login to TLServer. In this case the modems only replace the serial cable between the PC and the PLC.

So the 2 modems make the connection between the PLC and the PL.

After connection is made, you will have to use USER NAME and PASSWORD in ordder to monitor, control or program the PLC by the remote PC. Is my understanding correct?

Thanks.

Yes, you still need to enter username and password in order to login to TLServer from TRiLOGI.  In this case the TRiLOGI can be on a different computer as long as they are networked together.

Note that nothing protects the PLC from being connected by anybody who has a TLServer software and a modem.  If the PLC is connected to a public phone line and you want to ensure that anyone connects to it has the right to monitor/affect its operation, then use the SETPASSWORD command in TBASIC to demand that the connected party supply the password before proceeding further with any monitoring or control operation.
