Title: RS232 to USB port adaptor
Post by: rblacksea on May 02, 2004, 08:11:36 AM
Did anyone have problem with downloading or uploading from PLC using RS232 connected to USB port through adapter (usb to rs232)?

I recently used a Radio Shack USB to RS232 adapter cable with no problems (to a T100MD888+).

I use this older converter,

on my WinXP Pro Laptop.

Did not have any problems when talking to the ...888+ PLC.

At first I forgot to change the TLSERVER com port setup, since this converter comes up as COM 8 under windows, and not as a more common COM 2. Once I changed the setup, no problem.

I have tested the USB to Serial cable from OMEGA, and it didn't worked.

However I purchased another from Manhatan, and it went perfect.

To notice, both cables use ICs from the same company (I can't recall their name). I guess that the difference could be on the full compilance of the wiring for the RS232.

There are many brands of such converters in the market. Unfortunately not all of them work well with the TLServer, and some may not even work.  We now offer to our user a USB-RS232 converter shown below:

This USB-RS232 converter has been tested to work with the TLServer that runs on different brands of PCs in the past few year. We are now offering this model to take the guess work out of buying the "right" USB-RS232 converter and recommend it for new users who do not already own such a converter.

This serial converter offers a short cable length from the PC USB port and jack screw receptacles at the DB9 connector end. We recommend using the DB9 cable (shipped with all starter kits) for easy connection between the converter and the PLC.

I have been successfully using an Edgeport/1 USB to RS-232 Converter for about a year. The manufucturer is Inside Out Networks (www.ionetworks.com) and the vendor is B & B Electronics (www.bb-elec.com).

Make sure that in TLServer you select the right communications port (Com1, Com2, etc) assigned to the physical USB port your USB Converter is connected to.

If you have the Radio Shack converter and it won't work on XP, use the driver from:
http://serialio.com/products/adaptors/usb_serial.htm
and it will work!!

The reason why some brands of USB RS232 converter may not work in every applications is well explained by the following writeup:
