Can this program in the samples file be modified to work with the MD-HMI
on a T100MD+2424.

Sure you can. However, there are already samples programs for using the T100MD224+ with MD-HMI. They are all in the subfolder:

 C:\TRiLOGI\TL5\usr\samples\HMI

These programs are easier to modify to adapt to your needs.

i've looked at those. I want to change a value of x with direct entry of key pad. I can get the program to work with keys 0-2. they are on channel 2. higher keys move into channel 3. that is where I am stuck.

Look at the program "HMI25to40.PC5". It is specifically written to handle the word boundaries issue arising from using MD-HMI with T100MD2424+.
